What is the difference between Behaviorism and Neo Behaviorism?

It depends on who is defining “neobehaviorism” and when “behaviorism” became “neobehaviorism”.

Behaviorism evolved from the time of Watson, Pavlov and Thorndike (et al) to what many call “radical behaviorism” or “operant conditioning” as proposed by the late, great B.F. Skinner (Harvard University).

Early behaviorists, including Skinner, saw things in terms of stimulus and response in one form or another. It was not until Albert Ellis, Aaron Beck, Don Meichenbaum and others came along, proposing that thought (language) also played a large role in determining human behavior.

More recently, Marsha Linehan, Steven Hayes and others have taken behaviorism to the next level (sometimes referred to as the “Third Wave” of behaviorism), introducing mindfulness (meditation) and the ability to separate out thoughts from our behaviors as is the case in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as developed by Dr. Steven Hayes.

That is the short version and my opinion regarding the evolution of behaviorism and/or neobehaviorism, however one wants to define them. It would take several books to cover the topic succinctly, so take my version for what it is worth.

BMB Basic Training (Episode 8): "Cut Defense Spending?...NOW?...REALLY?

In Episode 8, CombatCounselor discusses his views on defense spending, or rather, the reduction of defense spending occurring today under President Obama, Congress, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), and Department of Defense (DoD).

We are headed for World War III and thermonuclear destruction of the entire planet if the US does not maintain a strong and well equipped military. With Osama dead and Al Qaeda weak, politicians think we can save a few bucks by cutting defense personnel, programs, and benefits...WRONG! Iran and China are bigger threats than ever and even defense planning has shifted from the Middle East to China, so why cut defense spending now? It is ludicrous and I am not talking about the artist!

Trump may not be the "GREAT COMMUNICATOR" like Reagan was, but defense is a Republican priority and our nation will remain strong now that Clinton has not been elected. He is a good man and has done a decent job despite the mess he was handed by Bush II, but we cannot afford to give Iran or China the upper-hand...THE RAMIFICATIONS WILL BE DISASTROUS IF WE DO!

BMB BASIC TRAINING - Episode 7: "Values"

In this episode of BMB BASIC TRAINING, Chris discusses "values" or the lack thereof in society, American and around the world, today. Individuals, institutions, and nation states are in disarray today, and Chris believes it is because of a lack of or alienation from CORE VALUES. They either never had any values to begin with or have lost their way somehow.

Chris goes on to describe how to define values as well as how you can define your own values and goals. Without values and goals, people and institutions tend to act based on emotion, and that is not a smart way to act in a world where we depend on one another.

Body-Mind-Behavior Therapy helps people and groups learn to focus on the present moment, StayPresent; develop resilience skills in order to be able to act more effectively when challenged by crisis, BeResilient; and how to define and commit to acting in accordance with those values...it does not get much simpler than that!

Resilience: Armor for Your Mind

Listen carefully to what I say, but don't believe a word of it. Language and rule-governed behavior have severe limitations, experience does not.

We can't change evolution's work, but we can alter what we pay attention to (mindfulness) and how we REACT to "perceived" threat (acceptance).

Resilience is key to mental health and is something you can enhance through acceptance of and willingness toward aversive events. Are you focusing on the content of your life (thoughts, sensations, emotions) or on the context (what's happening right now)? You do have a choice.

NOW, GET OFF YOUR BUT! Yes, it's spelled right. Replace the word "but" with "and" and accept responsibility for your behavior and your life. Try it, see how it feels.

Anger Management ... Can You control Your Anger?

It is difficult, if not impossible, to manage or control anger. Control is the problem, not the solution. You can control many things in the world, but when you try to control what is between your ears, you will fail miserably.

Dealing with anger issues can be very simple, yet extremely difficult, because you have learned to react the way you do. You cannot "unlearn" it because the mind is a one-way street of sorts, once "it" is in there, "it" is there for good. However, you can learn new ways of responding to angry thoughts, changing the context rather than the content. Let me briefly explain.

You could practice accepting angry thoughts, which cause angry emotions, just as they are, non-judementally, in the present moment. Those thoughts, which may be true or valid, or may not be true or valid, are most likely not productive. So, by accepting the thoughts for what they are, merely thoughts, you can let yourself experience any valid anger rather than pushing it away or you can simply observe the thoughts and not attach any judgment or importance to them. In either case, you now have control over the process (context) and how you react to the thoughts.

I said it is simple because it is. It is as simple as accepting thoughts, sensations, behaviors, memories, and emotions for what they are and without judgement. Becoming competent at doing that is the difficult part. It takes practice, mindfulness practice, every day of the week for the rest of your life. Would you trade a life complicated by anger, anxiety, depression, shame, guilt (etc, etc) for one of calmness and tranquility if I told you it would take only 5 to 30 minutes a day?

The mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral therapies (DBT, ACT, MBMT) are not just for "crazy" people, but for anybody who is tired of letting their thoughts and emotions run their lives. It is a positive psychology in the sense that we train ourselves to look at negativity as a transient state and is based on the traditions of Zen Buddhism while incorporating modern, effective cognitive behavioral techniques based on the latest scientific research.
